Three local elderly women fell for a “guess who I am” scam and lost a total of 420,000 patacas, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Wun Mam said at a regular press conference on Wednesday.

The three female victims are aged between 60 and 80, Chan said.

According to Chan, the victims received calls on their fixed-line telephones at home on February 27, last Friday and Tuesday respectively, mistakenly believing the scammers to be their family members.

Chan said that the scammers said they were in urgent need of money or were drunk and in trouble, adding that the scammers asked the victims how much money they had at home and in the bank, so that they can settle the matter with money.

The victims then followed the scammers’ instructions, withdrew the money and handed over the cash to the fraudster at the entrance of the bank or on the ground floor of where they lived, Chan said.

According to Chan, the victims called their real family members only to find out that they had been scammed.

Chan said the cases were reported to the police and are under investigation. No one has been arrested yet, according to Chan.
