Govt to replace worn-out fitness equipment in 20 sitting-out areas

The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) announced in a statement yesterday that it will gradually replace worn-out fitness apparatus with new ones in 20 sitting-out areas across the city.

According to the statement, the replacement of worn-out fitness equipment will be carried out first in four sitting-out areas in the first phase, after which the replacements will be carried out in 16 sitting-out areas in the second phase.

The statement did not specify when the first phase will commence.

According to the IAM website, the city currently has a total of 74 sitting-out areas, comprising 64 in the peninsula, eight in Taipa and two in Coloane.

According to the website, some of the city’s sitting-out areas are equipped with fitness equipment.

Yesterday’s statement noted that fitness apparatus in certain sitting-out areas were set up many years ago and they have also been frequently used, because of which some are in a very bad state.

The statement also said that some of the worn-out fitness equipment cannot be repaired because of the unavailability of parts.

According to the statement, the first phase will replace a total of 30 fitness apparatus in four sitting-out areas. In the second phase, a total of 116 fitness apparatus in 16 sitting-out areas will be replaced with new ones.

Meanwhile, the statement also said that during their routine inspection of the city’s sitting-out areas, IAM inspectors have often detected that graffiti has been scrawled on fitness equipment. The statement said that it took time for workers to clean off the graffiti, adding that on some occasions the bureau even needed to replace the equipment as the graffiti could not be removed. The statement urged residents to cherish public facilities.
