Dr Sun Yat-sen Municipal Park is now open 24/7, the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) announced in a statement yesterday.

Before today, the park was open from 6 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. daily.

Dr Sun Yat-sen Municipal Park is located between the Barrier Gate checkpoint and the Qingmao border checkpoint in Ilha Verde district.

The construction of the Macau-Zhuhai Qingmao checkpoint, which came into operation in September 2021, reclaimed a part of the Duck Channel near Dr Sun Yat-sen Municipal Park. The Duck Channel runs along the Macau-Zhuhai border, off Macau’s Ilha Verde district.

Because of the fact that Dr Sun Yat-sen Municipal Park was located next to a part of the Duck Channel that had already been reclaimed by the Qingmao checkpoint construction, the park is also commonly known as Duck Channel Park.

Yesterday’s statement noted that the Municipal Affairs Bureau widened the pavement outside Dr Sun Yat-sen Municipal Park in December last year, i.e., the pavement of a section of Avenida do Comendador Ho Yin, adding that the widened pavement has created a better walking environment for those walking between the Qingmao checkpoint and the Barrier Gate checkpoint neighbourhood.

While the Barrier Gate checkpoint is open from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. daily, the Qingmao checkpoint is open 24/7.

Yesterday’s statement also noted that “many” residents and visitors alike cross the Macau-Zhuhai border through the Qingmao checkpoint every day, adding that the checkpoint is used by “many” travellers also during the night and in the wee hours.

Consequently, the statement said, the Municipal Affairs Bureau has decided to open the Dr Sun Yat-sen Municipal Park 24/7 with the aim of making it more convenient for members of the public to use the park’s facilities at different times of the day.

The statement also reminded the public that while Dr Sun Yat-sen Municipal Park is now open 24/7, the opening hours of the park’s various facilities vary.

Renovation project

Meanwhile, the Municipal Affairs Bureau said last week that it expected to invite bids before the end of this year for the renovation of Dr Sun Yat-sen Municipal Park.

Lo Chi Kin, a vice-president of the bureau, made the remarks while speaking to reporters near the Taipa Houses complex on Saturday after attending the opening ceremony of this year’s Macau Green Week, which is running until Sunday, March 26.

Lo said a lot of the equipment and facilities in Dr Sun Yat-sen Municipal Park have worn out, because of which the bureau had decided to renovate the park, and commenced the design of the renovation last year.

Lo said that the bureau was now carrying out the final design of the park’s renovation, which was expected to be completed before the end of this year, after which the bureau would be able to launch a public tender for the renovation project, he said.

Lo also said that Dr Sun Yat-sen Municipal Park would remain open during its renovation, because of which the project would take a bit longer.

The area where Dr Sun Yat-sen Municipal Park is located was a landfill site before 1983. The park opened in the late 1980s. The park covers an area of around 52,000 square metres.
