The newly appointed director of the Identification Services Bureau (DSI), Chao Wai Ieng, pledged yesterday that his bureau will continue with its “service spirit” with the aim of providing the population with better-quality services.

Chao made the remarks during his swearing-in ceremony at the bureau in Nam Van, according to a DSI statement yesterday.

According to an executive order published in the Official Gazette (BO) last week, Secretary for Administration and Justice André Cheong Weng Chon, who oversees the bureau, has appointed Chao as its director for a one-year term, which took effect on Saturday.

Chao succeeds Wong Pou Ieng, who became the bureau’s director three years ago.

According to an announcement published in the Official Gazette last week, Wong’s appointment as the bureau’s director was not renewed on Saturday when it expired, upon her request.

Chao was sworn in by Cheong during yesterday’s ceremony.

Chao had been a deputy director of the bureau since March 2020. The bureau has two deputy directors in its organisational structure.

According to last week’s executive order about his appointment, Chao holds a bachelor’s degree in Legal Studies from the University of Macau (UM), as well as a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from National Taiwan University (NTU).

Chao, who joined the public administration in November 2003, started to work as an investigator in the Commission Against Corruption (CCAC) in February 2004.

Chao left the anti-graft body in December 2019 when he became an advisor to the Secretariat for Administration and Justice, i.e., Cheong’s office, a position he held before he became a deputy director of the Identification Services Bureau on March 18, 2020.

Meanwhile, Chan Un Lai was sworn in as  a deputy director at the same time.
