The Macao Institute for Tourism Studies (IFTM) said in a statement yesterday that it is ranked 10th among the higher education institutions globally for hospitality and leisure management studies in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023, while currently being the best in Asia in this field.

The rankings rate the top higher education institutions worldwide by individual topic areas and currently covers 54 subjects of study, the statement noted. The placings were released on March 22, with the achievement marking the first time that a higher education institution in Macau reached the elevated position in the rankings, the statement said.

According to the statement, IFTM jumped 13 places year on year and is ranked 10th in the world in terms of higher education institutions offering programmes in hospitality and leisure management. The institute also jumped from 3rd in Asia in 2022 to the top.

The statement added that IFTM is the first in this field in Macau for the seventh consecutive year under the rankings.

This year, the statement said, a total of 2,477 institutions worldwide were considered for the rankings by subject related to hospitality and leisure management education. IFTM’s “high score”, the statement noted, was attributed to the “academic reputation” indicator. It also had its “employer reputation” score “increase significantly”.

The tertiary education institution went from 33rd in the world in this area of study to being among the top 10 institutions in four years, with the improvement also coinciding with the institute’s “transformative steps” such as the launch of master’s degree and PhD programmes, and its new dual degree programmes in partnership with internationally acclaimed educational institutions.
