A newly renovated children’s playground located between Flora Garden and the private D. José da Costa Nunes Kindergarten will come into use today, but it is only open to members of the public outside the kindergarten’s school hours, the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) announced in a statement on Friday.
Previously, the playground was only used by the kindergarten, which is located on Avenida de Sidónio Pais. The government commenced a project last year to renovate the playground to be open also for members of the general public, during the kindergarten’s non-schooling hours.
The playground’s renovation, which cost around 7.4 million patacas, was completed last month.
Friday’s IAM statement said that the newly renovated children’s playground themed “natural jungle adventure” covering 1,500 square metres, features facilities suitable for kids aged between two and six or those below 1.2 metres in height.
From today, Friday’s statement announced, the newly renovated playground, which is located next to the entrance to Flora Garden, will continue to be used by children studying at the kindergarten during its schooling hours, while it is open to members of the public during the kindergarten’s non-schooling hours.
Specifically, according to the statement, the playground is open to the general public between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. from Mondays to Fridays, between 1 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Saturdays, as well as between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. on Sundays, public holidays, and the kindergarten’s other holidays.
The statement underlined that the newly renovated playground’s opening to the public outside the kindergarten’s school hours aims to promote the idea of sharing school facilities with the community.
According to the statement, the newly renovated playground now has three entrances and exits. One of the entrances is only used by the kindergarten, which is a gate that is part of the fence between the kindergarten and the playground, while the other two entrances are designated for members of the public, the statement said.
One of the two public entrances is located on Avenida de Sidónio Pais, while the other lies next to the lower station of the Guia Hill Cable Car, according to the statement.
The Guia Hill Cable car, which opened in 1997, connects Flora Garden with Guia Hill Municipal Park. The ride, which takes just 80 seconds, is reputed to be one of the world’s shortest cable car rides.
However, the statement said, for the time being only the public entrance next to the cable car station will be open, with the aim of ensuring the safety of children using the playground.
According to the statement, the newly renovated playground features a circular “car lane”, where only kids’ tricycles are permitted, surrounding various play facilities at the playground’s centre, such as beehive-themed slides, as well as a combination of wooden houses and slides.
