An overstaying male mainlander has been arrested for theft, and three have been arrested for aiding and abetting him, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Leong Chi Seng said during a regular press conference yesterday.
Leong identified the theft suspect as a 33-year-old businessman surnamed Fu.
According to Leong, a mainlander surnamed Gao told the police on Wednesday that his roommate, Fu, had stolen HK$17,000 and 400 patacas from him. Gao said that he had met Fu through a social media platform and that they had made plans to gamble together last week. Gao allowed Fu to stay with him in his hotel guestroom in the city centre.
Gao claimed that on Wednesday morning, after he had finished showering, he discovered that Fu had left the room, after which Gao discovered that his money had been stolen.
Fu was intercepted on Thursday at 11:30 p.m. in Avenida do Coronel Mesquita and was taken to the flat where he was staying nearby. Police officers then discovered that he had overstayed for three months. They later arrested a Filipina non-resident worker (NRW) surnamed Obra, who rented the room to Fu, and Fu’s friend surnamed Zhu who told him that Obra had a room he could rent.
Leong added that the police found 22,000 patacas on Fu, but Fu denied the accusation that he had stolen the moneyand claimed that it was his winnings.
Fu, Gao, Obra and Zhu have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP). Fu faces a theft charge, while Gao, Obra and Zhu face charges of aiding and abetting an overstayer, Leong said.
