Two men have scammed a mainlander by claiming that they could arrange a local work permit (colloquially known as “blue card”) for his wife, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Leong Chi Seng said during a regular press conference yesterday.
The mainland suspect, a 51-year-old non-resident worker (NRW) surnamed Zhang, is a construction worker, while the local suspect, a 56-year-old surnamed Fong, owns a renovation company.
According to Leong, the victim was introduced to Zhang last June who told him that he had a way to get a local work permit. The victim then transferred 6,200 yuan (7,300 patacas) to Cheong in the hope of getting a blue card for his wife.
The blue card never materialised and the victim reported the case to the police on March 22.
Zhang was arrested last Thursday at the Barrier Gate checkpoint. According to Zhang, Fong had been looking for a female worker from the mainland and had demanded a processing fee of 2,500 yuan. Zhang, taking advantage of the situation, decided to charge the victim 6,200 yuan, promising to introduce him to Fong and keep the extra money for himself.
PSP officers proceeded to contact Fong for further investigation. During questioning, Zhang confessed that he had had no means to assist the victim’s wife in finding employment, while Fong couldn’t employ her.
Fong and Zhang have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing charges of fraud, Leong said.
