China's Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) has held this morning a ceremony at the Forum Macao complex to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the promulgation of the Basic Law of the MSAR.
Li Hongzhong, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and vice chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, attended the ceremony and delivered a keynote speech.
Li said over the 30 years after the promulgation of the Basic Law of the MSAR, particularly since its implementation on December 20, 1999, the Basic Law has formed the constitutional foundation for the MSAR together with the Constitution of the People's Republic of China (PRC), defined the constitutional order of Macao, and provided all-round legal guarantee for the development of various causes in Macao.
While noting that the Report to the 20th National Congress of the CPC recognized and showcased the historic achievements of "One Country, Two Systems" practices and work related to the Hong Kong and Macao SARs over the years, Li stressed the strict and continuous reference to the report as guidelines for carrying out work related to the two SARs.
Well implementing the Basic Law of the MSAR is significant to writing new chapters for "One Country, Two Systems" practices in Macao, Li said, adding that efforts must be made to safeguard national sovereignty, security and development interests, practically implement the central authorities' overall jurisdiction, firmly implement the principle of "patriots administering Macao," and continue stepping up promotions of the Constitution and the Basic Law of the MSAR.
Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Edmund Ho Hau Wah and MSAR Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng also attended the ceremony.
In his speech at the ceremony, the chief executive described today's Macao Basic Law's 30th anniversary as a "historic day" marking a "magnificent route" since its promulgation by the nation's then president Jiang Zemin in Beijing on March 31, 1993.
