The Sports Bureau (ID) said in a statement yesterday that the Macau Grand Prix Organising Committee (MGPOC), after consulting the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), has determined that the four-day 71st Macau Grand Prix (MGP) will go on even it the Storm Warning Signal No.3 has been hoisted by the local weather station, with measures in place to ensure everyone’s safety.
Adjustments, the statement noted, will also be made in case of severe weather conditions, adding that the committee will remain in close contact with Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) and take corresponding measures.
As of 3 a.m. this morning, the SMG website noted that Storming Warning No. Signal No.3 remained in force and that there was a medium probability of issuing Typhoon Signal No.8 early in the morning.
The Sports Bureau statement reassured the public that measures including reinforcing the track and surrounding infrastructure and securing equipment that could become vulnerable in strong winds are in place to ensure everyone’s safety, adding that these will be adjusted or removed.
Moreover, the statement said that no tents will be set up in the grand stands. A number of raincoats will be available for spectators. The statement urged spectators to also bring their own raincoats instead of umbrellas to avoid impeding the view of others and to protect the race environment.
