The Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) urged the public yesterday to beware of phone calls made by purported IAS officials.
According to an IAS statement, the bureau has recently received reports from a number of residents that they had received phone calls with Hong Kong’s dialling code from bogus IAS officials, in which they provided their “staff name and numbers” in Putonghua, claiming that “there was an important document waiting for the residents to collect”, or their “medical insurance policy in the mainland has been cancelled”, requesting the residents to provide their personal information.
The bureau reaffirmed that it had not made any such phone calls, adding that the bureau has notified the Judiciary Police about the calls.
The statement underlined that members of the public should always be vigilant if they receive similar calls, and not easily provide personal information to others, so as to avoid being cheated.
