The “Allegory of Dreams: On the Way to the International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia” is being held at Tap Seac Gallery in Praça do Tap Seac until May 21, showcasing 11 works by the YiiMa Art Group.
The group was formed in 2019 by local artist Guilherme Ung Vai Meng and photographer Chan Hin Io, who was born and raised in Zhongshan. The group hosted their first large-scale exhibition at the Museu Coleção Berardo in Lisbon in the same year as their formation, according to a recent statement from the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC).
The statement noted that the exhibition comprises 11 exhibits that were showcased in the Collateral Event from Macau at the 59th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia last year, where the group represented the city. It also includes supplementary videos, literature, and objects featured in the photographic works.
The artists drew from venues filled with “historical traces” in Macau’s old districts, such as antique shops and old offices. The statement said that the group used large-scale sculptures, documentary images and “physical intervention” to guide the viewers through a visual impact into the city’s unique cultural environment, adding that it is a place “full of memories and historical connotations”.
The statement added that the bureau hopes to give members of the public a deeper understanding of “the international development direction of local art and expand their cultural horizons” through the exhibition.
Guided tours by the artists, along with workshops, will be held during the exhibition period, the statement pointed out.
The gallery is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is free. More details about the exhibition and outreach activities can be found by visiting www.MAM.gov.mo
