A dance adaptation of literary classic “The Lady of the Camellias” is slated to be shown at the Macau Cultural Centre’s (CCM) Grand Auditorium from June 9-10, the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) said in a statement yesterday.
The production is set in France in the 19th century and will, according to the statement, feature an “exuberant choreographic display, brimming with physical prowess”, with the adaptation created by British celebrity dancer and Shanghai ballet’s artistic director Derek Deane.
The statement noted that the romantic tragedy is based on Alexandre Dumas fils’ novel, which is “hailed as one of the greatest love stories of all time”. The score, the statement said, is by American composer Carl Davis. The performance revolves around Marguerite, a woman “whose life reflects the social and moral crisis of a decaying Parisian aristocracy”.
The statement added that the ballet “floats retrospectively” from the heroine’s terminal moments through her glamorous lifestyle and passionate romance with a young and handsome bourgeois man named Armand.
The Shanghai Ballet was founded over 40 years ago and has since produced and staged a range of programmes from classics to contemporary ballets, along with a raft of Chinese historical dance recreations, according to the statement.
The statement said that the company’s dancers will “breathe new life” into the frequently adapted classic, which has been performed since the 1800s. The story also inspired Giuseppe Verdi’s opera “La Traviata” and the Broadway hit musical “Moulin Rouge”.
Tickets for the show will be available from Sunday at CCM’s box office and Macao Ticketing network outlets at different prices and discounts. More information can be found by visiting www.ccm.gov.mo or calling the credit card ticketing hotline on 2840 0555.
