The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) said in a statement on Friday that a course of treatment will be launched tomorrow and on Wednesday for a celtis occidentalis (commonly known as hackberry) tree infected with wood-decay fungus, on Praça de Luís de Camões.
Hackberry is a large deciduous tree native to North America, according to Wikipedia.
According to the statement, the hackberry tree reinforced with rope years ago was found with cavities and decay in the trunk’s base during a recent IAM regular inspection by the bureau’s arborists.
In order to reduce the risk of the tree falling, the bureau will arrange for the large-scale pruning of the tree’s crown tomorrow and on Wednesday to reduce the tree’s height, while also continuing to monitor its health.
The statement underlined that while the tree’s branches are being cut off, members of the public must follow the on-site instructions, pay close attention to the temporary road arrangements and avoid approaching the area, so as to avoid accidents.
If residents find any trees with abnormalities, they should call the bureau on 2833 7676, or report it to the bureau through IAM Connect.
