The Health Bureau (SSM) has announced that one critical COVID-19 case was recorded in Macau on Thursday, a 41-year-old tourist from the mainland with chronic diseases.
The male tourist was one of three new COVID-19 patients admitted to the Health Bureau’s isolation and treatment facilities on Thursday, which were announced in a statement on Friday.
According to the Health Bureau’s COVID-19 website, which was updated yesterday, Macau’s official cumulative number of confirmed COVID-19 cases stood at 3,520, of which 3,398 had meanwhile been cured.
Macau’s official COVID-19 death toll has remained unchanged at 121.
According to Friday’s SSM statement, the male tourist came down with a fever, cough, and dyspnoea (difficulty in breathing) on April 22, after which he sought treatment at the private Kiang Wu Hospital, where he tested positive for COVID-19 in a rapid antigen test (RAT). However, the statement said, the man refused to be hospitalised at that time.
The man sought treatment at the emergency department of Kiang Wu Hospital again on Thursday when his symptoms worsened, after which he was transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre, where he was diagnosed with the novel coronavirus disease complicated by a pulmonary infection.
Friday’s statement said that the man was in a critical condition, adding that he was on a ventilator at that time. No update on his condition has been provided over the weekend.
According to the statement, the Health Bureau has still been unable to identify the man’s COVID-19 vaccination status and infection history.
64-year-old woman critical with flu
Meanwhile, Friday’s SSM statement also announced that one more critical case of influenza was reported earlier that day, a 64-year-old local woman inflicted with chronic diseases.
According to the statement, the woman, a retiree, came down with a fever and cough on April 18, after which she sought treatment at a health centre and the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre.
However, the woman sought treatment at the emergency department of Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre again on April 22 when she came down with shortness of breath, where she tested positive for the influenza A virus. She was then hospitalised and put on a ventilator.
However, the statement said, the woman came down with dyspnoea on Monday last week, because of which she was then transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU). She was diagnosed with influenza A complicated by a pulmonary infection and respiratory failure.
The statement said that the woman was still in a critical condition on Friday. She received a 2022-2023 seasonal influenza jab in November last year. No update on her condition has been provided over the weekend.
