In two separate cases, four men from Mongolia were arrested for theft, one for stealing a shoulder bag containing 130,000 patacas, and three for stealing a mobile phone worth 6,000 yuan, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Ho Chan Nam and Public Security Police (PSP) spokeswoman Lai In Hong announced during a regular press conference on Wednesday.
According to Ho, the Public Security Police (PSP) referred a suspected theft case to the Judiciary Police on January 23 in which someone had stolen a victim’s shoulder bag containing 130,000 patacas that he or she had hung on the back of their chair while having a meal at a hotel resort food court in Cotai.
A PJ investigation identified a 30-year-old Mongolian man surnamed Tsogoo and his male accomplice, who was still at large at the time of the press conference, as the suspects, Ho said, adding that after stealing the victim’s shoulder bag, the duo used various means of transport and changed their clothes before leaving Macau via the Border Gate checkpoint on the same day, so as to avoid being tracked by the police.
PJ officers arrested Tsogoo last Friday when he was re-entering Macau via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HZMB) checkpoint, according to Ho, who added that Tsogoo denied committing the crime and refused to cooperate with the police.
Tsogoo has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing an aggravated theft charge, Ho said, noting that PJ officers were continuing their hunt for the suspect at large.
Meanwhile, according to Lai, a male tourist reported to the Public Security Police on Sunday he suspected that someone had stolen his mobile phone worth 6,000 yuan that he had put inside his man-bag while he was shopping at a casino-hotel resort shopping centre in Cotai.
After scrutinising the shopping centre’s CCTV footage, PSP officers identified three Mongolian men as the suspects, Lai said, adding that the trio, aged between 28 and 32, had also attempted to steal valuables from a woman on the same day while on an escalator, but failed.
The officers arrested the trio at the resort’s casino that day and recovered the victim’s mobile phone from one of them.
The trio, whose surnames were not revealed, have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office, facing theft charges.
