The Marine and Water Bureau (DSAMA) said in a statement yesterday that as the typhoon season is approaching, it started last week to send its officials to assist in the reinstallation of flood control barriers at various piers in the Inner Harbour area, in order to prevent seawater from entering the area through the piers.

According to the statement, the bureau recently conducted its annual drill to install flood control barriers at the Inner Harbour piers, in order to prevent the low-lying areas from being affected by storm surges or heavy rainfall during this year’s typhoon season

During the drill, the statement pointed out, DSAMA officials explained and demonstrated the reinstallation of flood control barriers to enhance the flood protection capability of the Inner Harbour pier operators, and confirmed that the installation work was complete.

A total of 20 piers in the Inner Harbour participated in this annual drill, the statement pointed out.

Afterwards, the statement said, the bureau and the pier operators reviewed the wear and tear of the flood prevention facilities and equipment.

The statement pointed out that the government installed flood control barriers at piers in the Inner Harbour in previous years to strengthen the flood protection function of the shoreline.

According to the statement, the bureau has also strengthened its emergency notification mechanism by informing the Inner Harbour piers to put up flood control barriers whenever the Macau Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) issues a yellow or higher storm surge alert and warning.

The SMG issued the Thunderstorm Warning Signal at 12:30 p.m. yesterday and the Yellow Rainstorm Warning Signal was issued at 1:05 p.m., with flooding reported in low-lying areas. All rainstorm warnings were cancelled at 3 p.m. yesterday, and the Thunderstorm Warning Signal was in force until 7:30 p.m. last night, according to the observatory.
