The local duo, aged 18 and 23, are surnamed Wong and Chan respectively, according to the spokesman.

At about 2:30 a.m. last Monday, traffic police officers at a roadblock in Praça de Luís de Camões saw Chan riding a motorcycle with Wong as pillion from Rua do Tarrafeiro towards them suddenly stop near the roadblock, during which the latter got off the vehicle and fled the scene in the opposite direction, while the former turned the motorbike around and drove the wrong way down the one-way street towards the vicinity of Travessa dos Colonos, the spokesman said.

The officers chased and intercepted Wong in Rua do Tarrafeiro, according to the spokesman, who added that after scrutinising the city’s CCTV surveillance system, PSP officers arrested Chan at his home in Barra in the early hours of the following day.

Under questioning, the duo admitted that they had borrowed their friend’s motorbike to joyride around the city last Monday.

After checking the CCTV surveillance system, the police confirmed that the duo had taken turns to drive the motorcycle, and Chan also ignored another vehicle coming towards him while riding the wrong way down the one-way street, according to the spokesman.

The spokesman said that the police contacted the motorbike owner based on the vehicle registration, who said he was unaware of the pair’s lack of a driving licence.

According to the spokesman, the two suspects have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing charges of riding a motorcycle without a licence, dangerous driving and violation of an official order.
