Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Elsie Ao Ieong U said yesterday during her recent visit to Portugal as the head a delegation of the local government from May 18 to last Saturday she had met with a raft of medical institutions and schools and achieved “fruitful” results in cooperation with Portugal.

Ao Ieong spoke to reporters on the sidelines of yesterday’s closed-door plenary meeting of the Cultural Development Consultative Committee, adding that the delegation she headed had promoted exchanges in the areas of health, education and culture.

Particularly, Ao Ieong said, the delegation met with the Portuguese health authorities to discuss, among other things, the recruitment of Portuguese doctors for Macau and the feasibility of some Macau doctors undergoing training in Portugal.

Ao Ieong also pointed out that the delegation signed agreements with three public institutions in Portugal, and expressed the hope of the provision of more facilities for Macau students to study at Portuguese universities, such as Macau students studying medicine in English at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP), as well as exploring with the Portuguese education authorities the recruitment of Portuguese-language teachers to teach in Macau’s primary and secondary schools.

As for business cooperation, Ao Ieong said that discussions were underway to bring Portuguese pharmaceutical companies to invest in Macau.

In addition, Ao Ieong underlined that the bureau is also exploring the possibility of jointly restoring some of the Chinese archives in Portugal to enrich the archival collections of both sides.
