The Macao Polytechnic University’s (MPU) 2022-23 graduation ceremony took place yesterday at the campus’s multi-sport pavilion in Zape, with over 800 students obtaining their respective certificates of doctoral, master’s and bachelor’s degrees, and three of the graduates told reporters that they have a “positive” attitude towards their job prospects.

A female graduate of the Bachelor of Science in Computer programme, surnamed Chan, said that she had accepted a job offer from a local gaming operator with a monthly salary of more than 15,000 patacas, adding that previously she also had kept an eye on jobs in the nine mainland cities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA), but decided to work in Macau for the time being. “It’s not necessary to find a job that must match with one’s degree”, Chan said, adding she believed that it’s important to pay attention to the reputation of potential employers and job contents when seeking employment.

Choi, a female graduate of the Bachelor of Portuguese-Chinese Translation and Interpretation programme, said that she was optimistic about graduates’ employment prospects in Macau, but she was quick to add: “Opportunities are reserved for those who are well prepared, as long as they have equipped themselves with the right knowledge”.

A male graduate of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing programme, surnamed Wong, said he believed that Macau will need more medical talents in the near future, and he saw lots of job prospects in the medical field here. Although Wong said he did not consider developing his career in the Guangdong-Macau In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin for the time being, he said he wouldn’t reject any opportunities there in the near future.

Attending yesterday’s ceremony, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Elsie Ao Ieong U said in a speech that the local government will continue to strengthen the creation of a qualified workforce, promote the development of science and innovation, support the MPU and other Macau tertiary education institutions to highlight their own characteristics in cultivating various types of talents needed for social development and, therefore, contributing to the development of the country as a world power in science and technology.
