To mark the annual World Blood Donor Day, the Health Bureau (SSM) has held a raft of activities, including an award ceremony for blood donors who donated blood more than five times last year, giving out special souvenirs for people donating blood today at the Macau Blood Transfusion Service (MBTS), according to an SSM statement yesterday.
Today is World Blood Donor Day, which is celebrated every year on June 14, started in 2005 by the World Health Assembly (WHA), with this year to be themed “Give blood, give plasma, share life, share often”.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), donating blood repeatedly can help build a safe and sustainable blood supply.
According to the MBTS official website, Macau’s blood stock level of A positive (A+), B positive (B+), AB positive (AB+) and O positive (O+) range from “satisfactory” to “safe” respectively.
Generally, healthy individuals aged between 17 and 69 can donate blood, while male donors can give blood every three months and female donors can give blood every four months.
Statistics provided on the MBTS website show that 2.68 percent of the population were active blood donors in 2021, with donors aged from 30 to 39 accounting for 35 percent of blood donors in 2021.
The bureau regularly encourages healthy members of the public to donate blood habitually. Anyone who intends to donate blood today can make an appointment on the MBTS website at https://www.ssm.gov.mo/cts/blook-ser/preson-make. The bureau added that healthy individuals are also encouraged to register as a bone marrow and blood stem cell donors.
The Macau Blood Transfusion Service (MBTS) operates under the Health Bureau and is the only institution supplying blood and its derivatives in the city. It was set up in 1988 with the cost fully borne by the government. Blood supply is provided to all patients in need through the local hospitals.
