The Judiciary Police (PJ) said in a statement that a hotel room in Taipa caught fire yesterday as a guest had left a hairdryer on the bed that was still switched on.
The guest is a 32-year-old Hong Kong woman who told the police that she’s jobless.
No one was injured in the incident.
The statement said that under questioning, the woman told the police that she forgot to turn off the hairdryer after using it around 9:45 p.m. yesterday. The hairdryer soon caught fire which spread to the bedside table, after which the woman immediately used items on the bed to extinguish the fire.
According to the statement, police officers who arrived at the scene discovered the soft leather top of the bedside table, two blankets, and four pillows had been burnt.
The hotel estimated the total property damage to be 30,000 patacas and demanded compensation.
The Judiciary Police have classified the case as suspected arson by negligence and has transferred it to the arson section of the Judiciary Police.
