Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes attended the World Tourism Organisation’s (UNWTO) meetings and activities that took place in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh from last Thursday through Saturday, according to an MGTO statement on Saturday.

The statement noted that during the period, the UNWTO convened the “35th Joint Meeting of the UNWTO Commission for East Asia and the Pacific and the UNWTO Commission for South Asia” and the “UNWTO Conference on the International Code for the Protection of Tourists”.

UNWTO members presented reports on the organisation’s affairs, the statement said, while Senna Fernandes gave a presentation on Macau’s “endeavours to foster the concerted development of tourism and other related industries through cross-sector integration of tourism+’” on the city’s behalf as a UNWTO associate member at the Joint Meeting.

Macau has been a UNWTO associate member since 1981 and “established a solid foundation for cooperation” with them, the statement noted.

Meanwhile, the UNWTO Conference on the International Code for the Protection of Tourists, the statement said, held a dialogue on the challenges and opportunities for the tourism sector in Asia and the Pacific on the road to post-COVID-19-pandemic recovery, as well as the importance of protecting international tourists.

The programme included a high-level discussion, technical discussions, and a panel discussion, among others. Senna Fernandes joined the high-level discussion as a key speaker and presented the latest overview of Macau’s tourism industry since the gradual lifting of COVID-19 travel restrictions early this year. The statement added that she also talked about Macau residents’ travel safety and the city’s experience in protecting tourists.

The conference engaged 175 delegates from related entities and 28 countries and regions.
