Secretary for Transport and Public Works Raimundo do Rosário reaffirmed yesterday that he is confident that a future rainwater pumping station in the southern area of the Inner Harbour district, the construction of which is being carried out along with the installation of box culverts and new rainwater drains and sewer pipes, will be able to alleviate the long-standing flooding woes affecting the low-lying district.

Rosário made the remarks while speaking to reporters after unveiling the inaugural plaque of the newly relocated Mong Ha Post Office, which started operating yesterday.

The project is being carried out in three phases in total.

The first phase, which got off the ground in November last year, is now scheduled to be completed in July next year.

The first phase is the construction of a rainwater pumping station on the waterfront near The Riviera Macau residential building.

According to the website of the Public Works Bureau (DSOP), the project’s second phase, which started in February this year and is slated to be completed in December next year, is building box culverts, as well as installing new rainwater drains and sewer pipes between the new rainwater pumping station and the Maritime Training School, which is located near A-Ma Temple.

According to the DSOP website, the project’s third phase, which got off the ground in April this year and is slated to be completed in June 2025, is the construction of a sewer pumping station near Praça de Ponte e Horta (known in Cantonese as Si Ta Hau – “City Entrance”), as well as the installation of box culverts and new rainwater drains and sewer pipes between the new rainwater pumping station near the Riviera Macau residential building, and the junction of Rua das Lorchas and Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro (aka San Ma Lou in Cantonese – “New Road”).

Speaking to reporters yesterday, Rosário also acknowledged that the large project being carried out across the southern area of the Inner Harbour district is causing a major impact on traffic there.

The policy secretary said that as the Inner Harbour district is an old neighbourhood, various types of technical problems could be expected to occur during the project’s construction process.
