The Infrastructure Development Office (GDI) has announced that it expects the main structure of the ongoing infectious disease centre project next to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre to get off the ground in the first quarter of next year.

The project is carried out in two phases – the foundation work and the main structure.

According to the office’s website, the project’s foundation work got off the ground in late 2018. While the foundation work was initially scheduled to be completed in November this year, it has been delayed due to the COVID-19 epidemic, and the office now expects it to be completed in December this year. The foundation work has been carried out by China Road and Bridge Corporation for 109.86 million patacas, according to the website.

The future centre is officially known as Public Health Building – which is the first-phase extension project of the adjacent public hospital.

The office unsealed bids submitted by 17 construction companies for the main structure of the project on Monday. Among the 17 bids submitted, 16 were accepted, while the office accepted the remaining one conditionally – the company will have to submit some documents that it failed to submit within a specified period of time.

According to a statement by the office on Monday, the main structure quotations proposed by the 17 bidders range from 877 million patacas to 1.068 billion patacas.

According to the statement, the office has set a maximum period of 730 working days for the winning bidder to complete the main structure project. However, within the stipulated period, the winning bidder is required to complete the topping out of the main structure within the first 450 working days.

According to Monday’s statement, the construction periods proposed by the 17 bidders range from 620 to 695 working days.

The site where the infectious disease centre will be located covers about 5,700 square metres. According to Monday’s statement, the 35.6-metre-high building with eight storeys will have a gross floor area of 31,000 square metres.

According to the statement, the centre will have 80 isolation wards, as well as a laboratory, surgery rooms, observation rooms, X-ray rooms, and computed tomography (CT) rooms.

The statement underlined that the infectious disease centre will be built in line with the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) standards for infectious disease prevention and treatment.

According to the office’s website, a footbridge and an underground tunnel will be built to connect the centre with the public hospital.
