“Genesis and Spirit – Showcase of Hainan Intangible Cultural Heritage” is slated to be held from June 30 through October 8, with the event’s activities aiming to introduce local residents to Hainan province’s “rich array of intangible cultural heritage” through exhibitions, performances, live demonstrations and workshops.
The event, first held in 2011, also celebrates “China Cultural and Natural Heritage Day”, and promotes exchanges and cooperation between the mainland and Macau in the intangible cultural heritage field, and aims to enable residents to “better experience the rich cultural essence” of the nation, according to the statement.
The statement said that the opening ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. in Mount Fortress Garden on June 30, followed by performances with “Hainan characteristics” at 7 p.m. Mount Fortress Garden will be open until 8 p.m. on the day.
Moreover, the “Genesis and Spirit – Exhibition of Hainan Intangible Cultural Heritage” exhibition will be held at the Macao Museum from July 1 through October 8 to showcase Hainan’s intangible cultural heritage items such as traditional Li textile techniques of spinning, dyeing, weaving and embroidering and Hainan coconut carving, according to the statement.
“Genesis and Spirit – Performances of Hainan Intangible Cultural Heritage”, meanwhile, will be held on July 1 on Broadway Food Street and Iao Hon Market Park, featuring a fashion show of the Li ethnic group, Hainan opera, among others, the statement noted.
The series of activities also includes arts and crafts demonstrations and interactive workshops. The statement said that from July 1-7, experiential activities of incense-making and tea-tasting will be held at Lou Kau Mansion, while workshops on Hainan coconut carving, pottery-making techniques and bamboo-weaving techniques of the Li ethnic group, and the Miao ethnic group’s embroidering and wax dyeing techniques will be held at the Mandarin’s House from July 1-2.
Registration for the workshops can be done via the Macao One Account (activity.mo.gov.mo/activity-h5/activity-list-web) on or before next Monday. Lots will be drawn if workshop registrants exceed the maximum number of participants, with those selected to be notified via SMS.
