A male Mongolian in his forties has been arrested for his alleged involvement in two theft cases, Public Security Police (PSP) Lam Keong said at a regular press conference yesterday.
The suspect surnamed Vanya told the police that he’s jobless.
According to Lam, last Thursday a local man reported to the police that earlier that day he was jostled when walking along Rua do Cunha in Taipa, after which he later discovered that his wallet, containing 1,880 patacas, had been stolen from his backpack
On the same day, the police received a report from another local man that his wallet had been stolen, containing HK$15,000 in cash, at a hotel in Cotai. The wallet was later retrieved by the hotel security and handed back to the victim, but all the cash inside was gone.
After reviewing surveillance footage, the police identified Vanya to be the suspect in both cases. They intercepted him the following day at a massage parlour in Zape. He admitted to stealing from the victim in the first case and claimed that he had gambled away the ill-gotten money. However, he denied stealing from the man at the Cotai hotel.
Vanya has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing theft charges, Lam said, adding that he also faces a charge of providing false information about his personal data as he had made false statements about his identity to the police.
