The private Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) is partnering with the University of Cambridge to offer the “Dr Liu Chak Wan Scholarships” starting from the 2024/2025 academic year, supporting three MUST graduates in undertaking their master’s degree at the UK university each year, according to a MUST statement yesterday.

The University of Cambridge is the third oldest university in the world, according to the statement.

Dr Liu Chak Wan, the statement noted, is an MUST Chancellor. The scholarships will cover the cost of their recipients’ course fees and living expenses at Queens’ College, one of the University of Cambridge’s 31 constituent colleges.

The statement said that Queens’ College President Mohamed A. El-Erian looks forward to welcoming the first three master’s students in joining the “intellectual community” in October 2024.

The statement added that MUST President and Chair Professor Joseph Lee Hunwei (aka Hun-wei Lee) was quoted as saying: “I am glad that we can partner with Cambridge in offering our students the opportunity to study alongside the brightest minds of the world. I also hope the academic exchanges between Cambridge and MUST, and between Cambridge and Macau will be further enhanced”.

Meanwhile, the statement said that Liu plans to offer more opportunities to MUST students to undertake further studies and looks forward to the day when its recipients return to “offer their expertise and share their multi-cultural experience”, as well as how they use their “multi-faceted intellectual approaches” to propose new measures to promote Macau’s economic development and nurture exceptional talents for the nation.

Scholarship application details will be announced shortly on both universities’ websites.
