A 55-year-old local woman “fell” from a residential building and died upon impact yesterday afternoon, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman said in a SMS message yesterday.

According to the statement, a passer-by in Rua de Pedro Coutinho found the victim lying on the ground and called 999 for help.

After receiving the report from the resident, the Fire Service Bureau (CB) went to the scene and the victim was taken to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre for emergency treatment.

According to the statement, the Public Security Police (PSP) and the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre notified the Judiciary Police at 13:52 p.m. yesterday that a female had died in a “fall” from a building in Rua de Pedro Coutinho, and requested PJ officers to go to the scene to investigate.

The deceased’s family had seen the woman that morning but were unable to contact her in the afternoon. They were later notified by the Judiciary Police about the incident. The family told the police that the woman had been suffering from a long-term illness before she died.

The statement said that no suicide note was found at the scene.

A preliminary examination of the body showed that the injuries of multiple fractures were consistent with a fall from a height, according to the statement, which pointed out that there were no suspected criminal injuries on the body.

The exact cause of death would be confirmed after a forensic examination, the statement said, adding that the case was preliminarily listed as a dead body found.

Anyone with suicidal thoughts looking for assistance is urged to call the Caritas hotline 2852-5222 or the Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) counselling hotline 2826-1126.
