A regular customer who cheated the female owner of a jade shop in San Kio district out of valuables worth 8,300 patacas last December was arrested at the Barrier Gate border checkpoint on Wednesday, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Cheong Heon Fan said during a regular press conference on Friday.

Cheong added that the local male suspect, aged 72, is surnamed Leong.

Cheong quoted the victim who reported the case to the Public Security Police on April 24 this year as saying that Leong, who had purchased products from her store several times, bought two batches of jade worth a total of 8,300 patacas on loan from her shop in late December last year by claiming that “the goods would be paid for after he had resold them”, but she eventually lost contact with him in mid-April this year.

After identifying Leong as the suspect, PSP officers arrested him when he was about to leave Macau via the Barrier Gate border checkpoint on Wednesday, according to Cheong.

Under questioning, Leong confessed that he had sold the jade he had on loan from the victim and had already spent all the proceeds, Cheong said, adding that the jobless suspect has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a fraud charge.

This undated handout photo provided by the Public Security Police (PSP) on Friday shows the jade shop fraud suspect being escorted by a police officer to the northern district PSP station on Avenida do Almirante Lacerda.
