Two local men have been separately arrested for drunk driving and hit-and-run offences while a designated local driver has been arrested for attempting to cover for the drunk driver, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Leong Chi Seng said during a regular press conference yesterday.

Leong identified the suspects in the first case as a 65-year-old retiree surnamed Sou, adding that the 38-year-old designated driver is surnamed Iun.

According to Leong, the police received a report from a resident on Thursday at 11 p.m. saying that while driving away from the Qingmao checkpoint carpark, his or her car was rear-ended by Sou’s car. Leong did not disclose the resident’s gender.

Upon arrival, police officers found Sou and Iun at the scene, where Iun told the police that he was driving the car at the time of the accident.

Leong said that after reviewing the area’s CCTV footage and questioning the victim, the police confirmed that the car was actually driven by Sou, and a breathalyser test showed that his alcohol concentration was 1.57 grammes of alcohol per litre of blood.

Under questioning, Sou admitted to drunk driving, while Iun claimed that he was instructed by his company to go to the scene and drive the car away.

Leong identified the suspect in the second drunk driving case as a 24-year-old man surnamed Chan who told the police he’s self-employed.

According to Leong, the police received a report from an attendant at the Qingmao carpark in the wee hours of Thursday saying that he or she had seen a drunken man riding a motorcycle inside the carpark, who had fallen off the motorcycle twice and causing another motorcycle to fall over. Leong did not disclose the attendant’s gender.

The attendant told the police that he or she approached the man, Chan, and urged him not to drive while under the influence. Chan then left the carpark on foot.

Upon reviewing the carpark’s CCTV footage, the police identified Chan and intercepted him at his flat on Rua da Ribeira do Patane at around 3 a.m., and a breathalyser test showed that his alcohol concentration was 2.01 grammes of alcohol per litre of blood.

Under questioning, Chan admitted to drinking the night before in Gongbei.

Chan, Iun and Sou have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP). Chan and Sou face drunk-driving and evasion of responsibility charges, while Iun faces a charge of aiding and abetting, Leong said.
