The Judiciary Police (PJ) hosted yesterday a lecture in conjunction with the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) to strengthen safety awareness and emergency preparedness in schools, with 100 school counsellors, DSEDJ officials and officers from the Judiciary Police in attendance, according to a PJ statement yesterday.
The lecture was held at the PJ headquarters in Zape.
According to the statement, the lecture aimed to strengthen cooperation between police and schools in responding to school crises, so as to correctly and quickly respond to incidents involving students and ensure their physical and mental safety.
The lecture took place one day after a 16-year-old girl was stabbed by a male ex-classmate on the campus of Colégio Mateus Ricci. The girl sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The statement said that the lecture was conducted by PJ Community Policing and Public Relations Division Chief Chu Wai Man, with the attendance of DSEDJ Secondary Education Division Chief Leong I On and others.
PJ officers explained basic criminal law and introduced the Judiciary Police’s case reporting procedures, as well as the procedures for dealing with domestic violence and sexual offences involving young people, the statement said.
The lecture also listed the precautions and basic negotiation skills needed to deal with emergency crises, in order to help school counsellors tackle different kinds of on-campus crises, the statement said.
According to the statement, the counsellors said that yesterday’s lecture had benefited them by giving them a clearer understanding of how to deal with various emergency situations and strengthen their resilience, adding that they hoped the police will continue to hold relevant training activities with the bureau in the future to allow more counsellors to participate and jointly improve their ability to cope with campus emergencies.
The Judiciary Police will continue to organise more thematic lectures and training courses for teaching staff and school counsellors to enhance their ability to prevent crime and respond to safety and security crises, the statement noted.
