The Amagao Gallery at Artyzen Grand Lapa Macau hotel is hosting a “Portuguese Contemporary Art Exhibition” until August 6, showcasing the works of 14 Portuguese artists.
According to a recent joint statement from Artyzen and the gallery, which is managed by Galeria 57 Macau Limitada, the exhibition strives to give art enthusiasts “a new perspective” of Portugal’s contemporary art scene and is being held in celebration of Portugal’s June 10 National Day.
The works on display, the statement noted, include paintings, drawings, and sculptures with artistic expressions ranging from the figurative to the abstract. The exhibition also showcases diverse themes, techniques and colours, the statement noted.
The exhibition highlights artist Abílio Febra, who was invited from Portugal and has been exhibiting his works since 1984. The statement added that Febra, who studied sculpture at Ar.Co in Lisbon, has held over 30 solo exhibitions and participated in over 100 group exhibitions including in national museums across Portugal, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Macau.
The statement said that Febra is known for his experimentation with materials and incorporating concepts of primitivism, while expressionism and gesturalism are also evident in his artworks.
Primitivism, Wikipedia notes, is a “mode of aesthetic idealisation that means to recreate the experience of the primitive time, place, and person, either by emulation or by re-creation”.
Gesturalism, meanwhile, is a “style of modern art painting characterised by energetic, expressive brushstrokes deliberately emphasising the sweep of the painter’s arm or movement of the hand”, according to Wiktionary.
Amagao Gallery’s Managing Partner José I. Duarte was quoted in the statement as saying: “From vibrant abstract compositions to intricate figurative representations, with a rich cultural heritage as their foundation, these artists infuse their creations with unique perspectives, reflecting the country’s historical traditions, infused with contemporary influences.”
Area Vice President – Macau Operations for Artyzen Hospitality Group Rutger Verschuren was quoted as saying: “The Portuguese art scene is incredibly rich and diverse, and at Artyzen Grand Lapa Macau, we are committed to providing a cultural platform for our community to engage and cultivate in inspirational artistry with intellectual conversation.”
The gallery is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. It is closed on Mondays. Admission is free.
Amagao is one of the various alternative names of Macau.
