A suicidal local mother in her fifties is suspected of poisoning her 14-year-old daughter who was found dead early yesterday morning in a flat on Rua Marginal do Canal das Hortas, in the northern district, according to a Judiciary Police (PJ) statement.
PJ spokeswoman Lei Hon Nei said in the statement that the police were notified by the Fire Services Bureau (CB) of the death at 12:34 a.m. yesterday.
The statement quoted a friend of the victim’s mother as saying that he or she had been unable to contact the victim’s mother for several days and thus reported the case to the police. The statement did not reveal the gender of the friend.
Upon breaking into the flat, firefighters discovered the girl’s body lying on a bed. Later, it was confirmed that she had been dead for more than 24 hours. In addition, they found the mother in another room, lying on the floor and appearing to be in a weakened state.
No suspicious injuries on both were found, nor were there any signs of a struggle found at the scene, the statement said. However, police found multiple suicide notes and remnants of suspected illegal drugs in the flat.
According to the statement, the police suspect that the mother mixed sleeping pills and the suspected illegal drugs in the meal she and her daughter ate together, resulting in the death of her daughter.
The statement said that the case has preliminarily been classified as an attempted suicide and a homicide. The Judiciary Police yesterday were still investigating the exact cause of death of the victim and the suspect’s motive.
