Macao Water Deputy General Manager Oscar Chu Wai Man told reporters on Saturday that the daily tap water supply so far this year has peaked at 300,000 cubic metres, adding that the public utility was keeping an eye out for the possibility of surpassing 310,000 cubic metres this month, which is when the peak demand for tap water is due to the number of tourists in the city.

Chu made the remarks during the annual Ilha Verde Water Treatment Plant’s Open Day.

The overall tap water consumption rose 6 percent in June this year compared to the same period last year, said Chu, who estimated a double-digit increase in tap water consumption this month, with the growth of annual tap water use to reach up to over three percent.

Meanwhile, with the completion of partial repairs to the Ilha Verde Water Treatment Plant in the first phase, the second phase of major repairs will be carried out from the fourth quarter of this year until January next year, according to Chu.

The water treatment plant has been in operation for over 30 years.

As some facilities will be suspended when the water treatment plant is being repaired, the tap water supply capacity from there was expected to be reduced by about 55 percent said Chu, who was quick to add that the overall tap water supply will not be too impacted with the operation of the reservoirs in Seac Pai Van and in Zape, which, he believed, would be sufficient to meet the current tap water demand, with the daily tap water supply still reaching 400,000 cubic metres.
