A mainland man made a false report to the police by fabricating that his money had been stolen by the “ecstasy gang” (迷魂黨), after losing it all and the money he borrowed from a friend to try and win back the amount he had already lost, Judiciary Police spokeswoman Lei Hon Nei said during a regular press conference on Friday.

According to Lei, the suspect, aged 30 surnamed Xie, told the police that he is a businessman.

According to Lei, the police received a report on July 19 from Xie that after drinking mineral water provided by an unknown woman, he felt dizzy, unwell and  passed out, and when he was unconscious, HK$90,000 in cash was stolen from him.

However, after investigation, the police found that the case and Xie’s statement were doubtful, according to Lei.

After repeated questioning, Lei said, Xie finally admitted that he had lost HK$130,000 in gambling in Macau and borrowed HK$90,000 from a friend in order to “turn over his capital” and promised to return the money before he left Macau, however, he lost all that money gambling too.

Xie admitted that he had made up this “fictitious crime” due to his inability to repay the debt and intended to borrow more by reporting a false crime to deceive friends, but was eventually exposed by the police, according to Lei.
