The University of Macau’s (UM) Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) recently organised the fifth and sixth instalments of “The Pursuit of Research” science popularisation activity for the FHS’ 10th anniversary, with a total of 70 students and teachers from 11 local secondary schools joining the activity, according to a UM statement yesterday.

The activity aimed to raise student interest in health sciences and to enable them to make the most of their summer break, the statement noted.

An introduction to the faculty, its teaching, and research achievements in the last decade were presented by FHS Assistant Professor Chang Wa Kam and UM Macao Fellow Lei Chon Lok during the opening ceremony, as well as encouraging students to learn more about university research and experience the fun in it through the activities.

Meanwhile, FHS Senior Instructor Wang Li and Research Assistant Professor Sun Heng took participants to visit the faculty’s core facilities and learn about UM’s research achievements in precision oncology, stem cells and development, as well as ageing and related diseases.

FHS members also guided students to conduct experiments in biomedical sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, and bioinformatics, according to the statement.

The statement said that FHS has been promoting science education to members of the public over the past decade through regularly organising various science popularisation activities that aim to “improve secondary school students’ understanding of science and enhance their research literacy”.
