The large-scale immersive “To Infinity and Beyond: The Art of Hsiao Chin” exhibition is currently on display at the MGM Theatre of MGM COTAI as part of the company’s initiative to support the ongoing “Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2023”.
Open until September 24, the exhibition displays works by mainland China’s modern abstract art master Hsiao Chin (1935-2023) throughout his career from the 1960s to this year, according to a recent MGM statement, noting that Hsiao is one of the most significant Chinese artists in the past 60 years.
Hsiao is one of the founders of the Punto Movement (1961-66)*, which the statement noted is “the essence of traditional Chinese culture and art”.
Most of the works are on a world tour in international museums, and are curated by acclaimed cultural entrepreneur from Hong Kong Calvin Hui (許劍龍), while renowned UK curator Philip Dodd is the curatorial consultant.
The exhibition is comprised of eight zones, namely Circle of Life, Spiritual Journey in the Universe, Origin of Chi, Space Travel, Samantha’s Eternal Garden, The Artwork Exhibition, Beyond Infinity, and Digital Art Jamming at Lion Lobby.
Featuring the “ART-TECH-TAINMENT” concept, which combines art, technology, and entertainment, the statement said that the exhibition creates immersive experiences that feature Hsiao’s masterpieces, with highlights such as the debut of the art film “Hsiao Chin’s Universe”, which audiences can view on a 12-meter space-themed LED canvas from an elevated platform; the digital installations “Sky Mirror” and “Infinity”; and the VR experience “Samantha’s Eternal Garden”.
MGM China Holdings Limited Chairperson and Executive Director Pansy Ho Chiu-king was quoted in the statement as saying that the exhibition “unveils Hsiao Chin’s boundless universe of art with an innovative approach transcending space. Being the largest multimedia exhibition throughout Hsiao Chin’s lifetime career, this exhibition is another breakthrough of MGM’s art endeavours”.
The exhibition is open daily from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., with the last admission at 8:30 p.m. Admission is free and requires pre-registration. More details are available on https://www.mgm.mo/en . Public guided tours are also available during the exhibition period.
*“Punto”, means “points” in Italian, it is the smallest and most basic creative element in Western art where a point can extend into lines which then construct different forms. In 1961, Hsiao Chin founded Punto International Art Movement in Milan with Italian artist Antonio Calderara, Japanese Sculptor Kenjiro Azuma, and Chinese artist Li Yuan-jia. The manifesto of Punto is to show understanding to the “finite” within the “infinite”, and used it as the medium to represent the true meaning of life. It became the first few international art movements that was founded together by both Asian and Western artists at that time. Being the first Chinese leading member in the Movement, Hsiao Chin’s achievement in forging cultural exchange between the East and West was extraordinary. – Source: https://m.facebook.com/3812gallery/posts/1110051612479050/
