A comparative testing report on 30 types of sunscreen clothing, released by the Macau Consumer Council (CC) in conjunction with its counterpart in Shenzhen yesterday, notes that all the samples met the official ultraviolet (UV) protection standard, reaching the Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) rating of 40.
UPF ratings of 40, 45, 50 and 50+ are considered to provide excellent levels of sun protection.
The report, conducted by the two consumer councils between February and July this year, aims to provide a reference for consumers to choose sunscreen clothing that could better protect their skin.
According to the report, the two consumer councils purchased a total of 30 types of sun protection clothing priced at between 80 and 630 patacas for children and adults in physical shops and online platforms in Macau and Shenzhen for the comparative test, focusing on their ultraviolet resistance, moisture permeability, instant cold feeling, formaldehyde content, fibre content and label recognition, among other aspects in physical properties and chemical safety.
Concerning the aspect of blocking the direct exposure of ultraviolet rays in the sun, a CC statement noted that the test results showed that the UV protection performance of all the 30 samples met the requirements of the test standards before and after three times of cleaning, while five samples of adult sun protection clothing bought from shops in Macau did not detect formaldehyde, which may cause allergic reactions.
Yesterday’s CC statement quoted the report as urging consumers to purchase appropriate sunscreen clothing according to their actual needs, while suggesting consumers select loose sun protection clothing in dark colour with a UPF sunscreen label of rating 50+ when engaging in outdoor activities for a long time.
