A man from the mainland has been arrested for allegedly burgling a rooftop flat in a residential building on Calçada do Monte, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Leng Kam Lon said during a special press conference yesterday.

Leng identified the suspect as a 50-year-old man surnamed Wu. He claimed that he’s a restaurant owner.

According to Leng, the homeowner reported to the police on Sunday at 2 a.m. that someone had broken in and stolen a backpack and other belongings. He told the police that he was sleeping at the time of the burglary and reported a loss of about 1,400 patacas.

With the help of the citywide CCTV surveillance system, police found that the burglar, Wu, climbed into the rooftop unit through a window from a public platform of the building around 1 a.m. that day. Wu was arrested at a hotel in Zape later that day, and the backpack was retrieved in Wu’s hotel guestroom.

Under questioning, Wu admitted that he had been to the area near Calçada do Monte but refused to disclose further details, and he denied burgling the flat.

Wu was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) yesterday, facing a theft charge, according to Leng.

Evidence seized from the mainland suspect such as banknotes and a backpack is displayed during yesterday’s special press conference at the Judiciary Police (PJ) headquarters.
