Last month's casino takings reach highest since Jan 2020, up 4,083 pct

Macau's 30 casinos run by six rival concessionaires generated gross gaming revenue (GGR) of 16.6 billion patacas (US$2.06 billion) last month, a year-on-year growth of 4,082.9 percent, the local gaming industry's highest GGR growth on record, the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) has announced today.

In July 2022, when Macau's economy was still severely affected by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, GGR stood at just 398 million patacas.

According to DICJ statistics, last month's GGR was the highest since January 2020, which amounted to 22.1 billion patacas. Macau confirmed its first COVID-19 case on January 22, 2020.

Month-on-month, GGR rose 9.56 percent last month.

In the first seven months of the year, GGR grew by 263.0 percent year on year to 96.79 billion patacas, accounting for still just 55.6 percent of GGR in the same period of pre-pandemic 2019.

Baccarat has been Macau's most popular game of chance for decades. According to the latest official data, baccarat generated 84.7 percent of local casinos' GGR in the first half of this year.
