A couple originally from the mainland and two locals have been arrested for their involvement in two sham marriages, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Wong Wai Chon said at a regular press conference on Monday.

The couple are a 48-year-old man surnamed Zhang and a 47-year-old woman surnamed Wang. Both obtained a permanent Macau ID card in 2010 and work as casino dealers. The two local suspects are a 50-year-old woman surnamed Ng and a 72-year-old man surnamed Ian. Ng works in a casino while Ian told the police he’s jobless.

Wong noted that Zhang and Wang married in 1997 and with the assistance of a middlewoman, who has meanwhile passed away, they divorced in 2005 so that they could marry Ng and Ian later in the same year respectively. After obtaining their local ID cards, Zhang and Wang applied for their elder son from the mainland to move in 2010 to Macau who obtained Macau residency later that year. The two bogus couples formalised their divorces in 2012 and 2013 respectively.

The police received a report about the fake marriages recently and summoned the quartet to a police station for questioning last week. They all confessed to the offence. Zhang and Wang told the police that they paid HK$50,000 to the middlewoman. Ng claimed that she had not received any payment for the deal, while Ian said that he had received around HK$20,000 from the middlewoman.

The four suspects have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing charges of involvement in a sham marriage, Wong said.

This chart provided by the Public Security Police on Monday shows the details of the sham marriage case involving four suspects and two bogus marriages.
