The Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) said in a statement yesterday that its MPU-Bell English Centre organised two summer English teacher training courses in conjunction with the Shanghai Normal University from July 16 to August 3, with the professional development courses attracting English teachers from over 10 higher education institutions in Shanghai.

The statement noted that the courses, which had a training team led by MPU-Bell English Centre Director David Sansom, focused on enhancing university-level English teaching and covered discussions on English language enquiry, teaching methodologies, and the integration of technology in teaching.

The courses focused on two main topics, the first being “English Enhancement for Teachers”, which explored “different aspects of the English language and university-level English teaching methods through classroom sharing and teaching demonstrations”, the statement said.

“Integrating Educational Technology into Teaching and Learning”, meanwhile, focused on the “development of educational technology with discussions on how to combine technology with teaching in order to enhance university-level English teaching”, according to the statement.

The statement said that participating teachers were satisfied with the courses, adding that they were “delighted” with the course content and well-structured schedule.

Through its “meticulously designed” courses, the statement noted that the centre plays a “crucial role in positioning Macau as a hub for English training and international examinations” within the city and across the Greater Bay Area (GBA) as well as the mainland.

A series of summer and autumn English learning and IELTS* training courses are currently open for registration, the statement added, while examination dates for various international English tests can be found on bellcentre.mpu.edu.mo.

* The International English Language Testing System is an international standardised test of English language proficiency for non-native English language speakers. It is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP-IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English. It was established in 1989. IELTS is one of the major English-language tests in the world.
