The Public Security Police (PSP) announced in a statement on Thursday that their officers have arrested an 18-year-old male driver who crashed into a concrete barrier in Rua Sul do Patane, as well as a local man in his twenties for attempting to cover up for the local man driving without a licence, after the traffic accident.

According to the statement, the Public Security Police had received a report from a member of the public, whose surname and gender were not revealed in the statement, that when he or she was walking along Rua Sul do Patane, he or she saw a car with a badly damaged front end parked on the roadside without a driver.

After scrutinising their city-wide CCTV camera system, the statement said, PSP officers found that five people in the car abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene on foot after crashing into the kerb.

The statement noted that the two suspects have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing respective charges of aiding and abetting the perpetration of an offence and evading responsibility.

The statement underlined that drivers who leave the scene of a traffic accident and fail to call the police promptly could face a maximum sentence of one year in prison and a driving ban ranging from two months to three years.

Police nab uni student for drunk driving

Meanwhile, a 20-year-old local male university student was arrested on July 31 for drunk driving, a PSP statement said on Friday, adding that a breathalyser test showed that his alcohol concentration was 1.38 grammes of alcohol per litre of blood.

During a police patrol at around 8 a.m. on July 31, according to the statement, PSP officers found the suspect surnamed Cheong, who was reeking of alcohol, sleeping in a car with the engine running in Avenida do Comendador Ho Yin.

Cheong, who admitted that he had drinks while relaxing in Triangle Garden in Areia Preta district at about 4 a.m. that day, has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office, facing a drunk-driving charge.
