Donald Trump may be elected American president tomorrow. It would be one of the biggest surprises in the history of US presidential elections.
When he decided to run he was initially considered not to be a serious contender. Instead, his candidature tended to be seen as a gutsy and perhaps funny, but ultimately doomed media stunt: a slightly tongue-in-cheek act of brazen self-promotion by a half-respected, half-derided aging star tycoon.
A successful campaign by this combination of a ruthless billionaire and a grotesque mass-media celebrity could hardly be imagined. Trump appeared to be an all-too crude and all-too deviant caricature of the stereotypical Republican Party hero: the self-made businessman with staunch family values and an unwavering religious faith.
