The University of Macau’s (UM) Centre for Continuing Education and the Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL) jointly put on four courses to meet the demand for construction safety supervisors in the past year, with certificates awarded to 108 participants, a statement from the tertiary education institution said earlier this week.

The first edition of the course was launched in 2005 and has since held 61 intakes, with 1,911 participants completing the course.

The statement noted that the course comprised 150 hours of study and covers four major topics: “Occupational Safety”, “Occupational Health”, “Safety Management”, and “Occupational Safety and Health Legislation and Site Inspections”.

The course aimes to provide its participants with professional knowledge and enable them to assist employers in self-regulating occupational safety and health, according to the statement, with those completing the course as well as passing the assessment receiving a certificate jointly issued by the university and the bureau.

The statement added that both parties will jointly launch a course for construction safety officers, which is planned to start in mid-September, aiming to improve the standard of occupational safety and health and reduce the number of work accidents, in line with the government’s Law No. 2/2023 on occupational health and safety in the construction industry.
