A local woman in her forties has been defrauded out of HK$125,000 in a phone scam by fraudsters who claimed to be from the mainland’s police, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Wun Man said in a press conference yesterday.

The victim told the police that last Thursday she received a call from a purported mainland police officer claiming that the victim was suspected of money laundering and human trafficking and required her to conduct an “asset review.”

The next day, the victim followed the scammer’s instruction to transfer HK$125,000 to a designated bank account. Soon she lost contact with the scammer and finally realised that she had been scammed and reported the case to the police.

Meanwhile, Chan also noted that a local man in his twenties was scammed in a similar manner and reported a loss of 26,000 patacas on Friday.
