Macau’s sports delegation has come home with a satisfying medal haul from the 31st FISU World University Games in Chengdu, with seven medals – one gold, three silver and three bronze – in seven categories in the wushu competition, namely the women’s wushu “nanquan”, “nandao”, “jianshu” and “qiangshu”, as well as the men’s wushu “nangun”, “gunshu” and “sanda”, ranking 25th in the final medal table, according to a Sports Bureau (ID) statement yesterday.
Wushu is the collective term for martial arts.
Local athlete Wong Sam In won the gold medal for Macau in the women’s martial art modality “nanquan” on July 30, with 9.643 points, and a bronze medal in the women’s martial art modality “nandao” on July 29, with 9.506 points.
Local athlete Wong Weng Ian won two silver medals in the women’s martial art modality “jianshu” and “qiangshu” both on July 30, with 9.656 points and 9.593 points respectively, while another silver medal was won by local athlete Cheung Ioi Chit in the men’s martial arts “nangun”, with 9.66 points.
The other two bronze medals were won by athlete Lei Cheok Ieong in men’s martial arts “gunshu” with 9.6 points on July 30, while local sanda (댔) practitioner Cai Feilong defeated his South Korean opponent Jo Sanghun 2:0 in the men’s 80 kg quarter-finals on August 2.
Swimmer Chao Man Hou broke the nine-year Macau record of 01:02.91, which had been in place since 2014 in the men’s 100m breaststroke, and then beat it with 1:01.98.
Macau had sent a 78-member sports delegation, of which 52 athletes participated in eight sporting events, including swimming, judo, fencing, taekwondo, athletics, table tennis, badminton and wushu, according to the statement.
The 31st FISU World University Games took place in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province. The multi-sport event, which was held from July 28 through Tuesday, had 269 medals in 18 different sporting events up for graps, with more than 110 countries and regions with a total of about 6,500 athletes participating in this year’s Games.
The International University Sports Federation (FISU) headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland has 170 member associations.
