Since its official launch in November last year, the number of CTM customers who have upgraded to 5G has reached 370,000, of which over 50 percent are postpaid customers, CTM Commercial Affairs Vice President Ebel Cham Pou I said yesterday, adding that “the result is ideal and exceeds our expectations”.

Cham also said she estimated that the nearly 370,000 5G customers account for about 80 percent of the whole local market, pointing out that the customers have shown a “positive” response to CTM’s 5G services, “with wide recognition and acceptance”.

Cham also pointed out that the response to CTM’s 5G services by the business sector has been “good”, adding that due to the increasing demand for different 5G application scenarios by business customers, the telecom operator has launched an Internet of Things (IoT) device management platform, through which the customers can manage a large number of their mobile electronic devices used for different applications.

Thanks to advantages such as high security and low latency, Cham said she believed that 5G will help business operators manage the actual operation of mobile payment terminals and other application scenarios.

Cham said she hoped that the diversification of 5G application scenarios can assist residents and commercial customers in obtaining “more accurate” data analysis on applications, and better allocating resources.

When asked about the stability of its 5G services, Cham said that the telecom operator had yet to receive any feedback from customers about network stability problems.

Concerning the weak reception of 5G signals indoors in high-rise households, Cham said that CTM has been negotiating with the building owner management committees of various buildings, hoping to get their support for the installation of base stations. Cham also said that CTM “is endeavouring” to follow up on the situation.

Meanwhile, with the aim of integrating 5G applications into civil society and enriching the experience of parenting education through 5G and VR elements with interactive games and VR education applications, CTM and the Women’s General Association of Macau (commonly known as Fu Luen) co-launched yesterday a “5G Dream Station” at the Fu Luen FUFA Child and Family Centre on Rua do Campo, featuring 5G and VR technology.

Cham told reporters after the launch ceremony that the station was just the first “landing project” of the “Macau 5G Smart Service Development Alliance” which was co-established by CTM and several associations, promising that more 5G service experience projects will be launched in response to the needs of different associations in the future.
