A man from the mainland has been arrested after robbing an illegal currency exchange dealer in a hotel guestroom, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Leong Chi Seng said at a regular press conference yesterday.
The 21-year-old suspect surnamed Cai told the police that he’s studying in Canada. He came to Macau as a visitor.
According to Leong, Cai lost HK$200,000 in gambling earlier this week and subsequently arranged a meeting with an illegal currency exchange dealer through a mobile phone app at a hotel in Taipa on Tuesday.
During the meeting, Leong noted that Cai abruptly grabbed HK$200,000 in cash from the victim. This led to a heated altercation that spilled into the corridor, prompting the hotel staff to report the case to the police.
Police officers apprehended Cai at the location and discovered HK$67,000 in cash in his possession. The remaining amount of money was either recovered by the victim or scattered on the floor. Cai admitted to the crime.
Cai has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a robbery charge, according to Leong.
